Course Overview

Course Description

Introduction
ASTR 110L is an astronomy laboratory course that covers basic principles of experimentation and physical measurements of astronomical interest. Students should be either registered concurrently in ASTR 110 or ASTR 180 or have already passed either class.

Content
Course will cover the following topics:

  • Sun's Daily Motion
  • Building a Celestial Sphere
  • Using a Celestial Sphere
  • Seasons and Motion of Sun around Earth
  • Size and Distances
  • Pinhole Tube
  • Building an Astronomical Telescope
  • Telescopes (field trips tentatively first week of December to Maunakea)
  • Brightness

Structure
Course will meet once a week for 3 hours in the Astronomy Laboratory Room STB 205. Instructors will give a brief 10 minute presentation explaining the overall experiment and use of the equipment. Students need to prepare for the lab by reading the lab activity available in Laulima and by answering questions indicated by the instructors. It is very important that students show up on time. Students will then be allowed to run the experiment.
